The ABCs of Covid-19 was for my final capstone project for university. The ABCs of Covid-19 is a digital children’s book which educates and explains some terms which are used in and associated which today’s society. Since the start of the pandemic, children have been disrupted on getting an education at school with lockdowns and restrictions in place. During these Covid-19 lockdowns, not many people were able to access physical books at the library or go to school. As a result of this, children had to do their schooling at home online or put a pause on their learning or all together; creating a feeling of uncertainty or even wonder on what’s happening to the world. However, by creating this pop-up animated children’s book which explores the ABCs of Covid-19, children can understand and learn about this world disaster more.
I have used my own personal style for this book and also use different software such as Illustrator and Aftereffects to produce the final product. Firstly, I focused on my target audience; what would the children reading the book engage with? I did some research which made me decide to make this fun for children, having the pop-up effect for all the elements shown on the screen, which will excite the children. The use of two fonts contrast with each other, with the playful headings and letters and the sans serif, bubbly main text. The colours used for this book are neutral as the decision of creating a book for all genders was made. This digital book is inclusive for all children, including parents and caregivers and teachers. Secondly, the subtle animations on the illustrations allow some visual guidance with the book, putting an image to the word. This is a major positive of the book and will also engage the audience.
